Description: An artist and teacher of art in New Haven, Cogswell's specialty was silhouettes. She and her daughter, Dorothy McIntosh Cogswell (b.1909), conducted the Cogswell Art Colony for girls in Killingworth in 1930, and at Lake Columbia in 1931. Dorothy also taught art at Mount Holyoke College until her retirement. In addition to genealogical material on the Cogswell family, the papers include printed copies of Ruth Cogswell's silhouettes, with programs and publicity for exhibits and classes, account books, and attendance records; also printed copies of Dorothy Cogswell's work, programs and publicity for exhibits, together with records of her years in New Haven school and the Yale School of Fine Arts.
