Vacation in History at New Haven Museum

New Haven, CT, February 4, 2013—Meet a Revolutionary War soldier, trace silhouette portraits and practice cross stitching at the New Haven Museum. Bring children to the Museum for special 1-hour workshops during school vacation week to take a break from the electronics and participate in hands-on programs that will teach them about different items from the Museum’s collection and allow them to make a craft to take home. From Tuesday, February 19 through Thursday, February 21, each day will feature a different workshop that starts promptly at 10:30 am. Workshops are free with Museum admission ($4/adult; $3/senior; $2/student above 12; Free for children under 12). Space is limited. Pre-register at (203) 562-4183 x11 or education@newhavenmuseum.org. Please Note: Workshops are best for children over the age of 5. Children must be accompanied by adults at all times in the Museum.

During the “Dress Like a General” workshop on Tuesday, February 19 at 10:30 am, children will meet a Revolutionary War soldier from the 5th Connecticut Regiment and make a tricorn hat to take home.

For the “Schoolgirl Art” workshop on Wednesday, February 20 at 10:30 am, children will see some examples of samplers from the Museum’s collection and practice the art of cross stitching. Samplers were commonly made by young girls who were learning how to sew and embroider, important skills for colonial America.

On Thursday, February 21 at 10:30 am, children will see samples of silhouette artwork from the Museum’s collection and then make ready-to-frame silhouettes portraits to take home.
