Description: First National Bank of New Haven was chartered in 1863 and has undergone a number of name changes. In 1928 its name was changed to First National Bank and Trust Company of New Haven and in 1957, it merged with the New Haven Bank (organized 1792) and was renamed First New Haven National Bank. In 1977 it was reorganized as First Bank and in 1984 became part of Hartford National Bank and Trust Company.
The records include the charter, articles of association, certificates, correspondence, minutes, annual reports, legal and financial records, regulations, newspaper clippings, photos, and other records of the bank and its predecessors; correspondence, leases, sales agreements, building contracts, and other papers relating to bank buildings; records of several branches of First Bank; and materials of and relating to some of the banks merging with the bank, chiefly records (1765-1933) of Merchants National Bank (earlier Merchants Bank) which was absorbed by First National Bank and Trust Company of New Haven in 1932.
